February Mariposa Painting

The original painting for the February edition of Mariposa Mail Club.

This painting is inspired by the month of Love! It features a heart shaped concha (Mexican Sweet Bread), roses, chocolate covered strawberry, conversation heats, and tamales.

I’ve always connected this month with the color pink just like how March is green! I included some classic Valentine’s Day icons like roses, chocolate covered strawberries, and conversation hearts with sayings in Spanish. I added a heart shaped concha with pink icing as one of the main parts of the art piece. I feel like this is the embodiment of Mexico and el Dia de San Valentin! Something as classic as pan dulce turning into something so sweet and adorable. The last icon in the painting is the two tamales on the bottom left. On the 2nd of February, Mexico celebrates a holiday known as el Dia de la Candelaria. During this day, families have a party to eat tamales. The person that received the baby Jesus doll in their piece of Rosca in January is in charge of providing tamales for everyone.

A lot of these Mexican traditions have stemmed from religious events in Catholicism, but in modern times they have become customs that are celebrated just to have a reason to get together with family. I’m sure you know how so many Mexican and Hispanic people love to party and spend time with family.
