January Bubble Painting

This painting is inspired by the Moon Jellyfish.

I’ve always associated January with the color blue. Winter vibes and cold, crispy air with a soft stillness around you. I think that Moon Jellyfish really embody these feelings. They’re so, forgive the joke, but zero thoughts, just vibes haha. They move around in the ocean with such grace and peacefulness. I think we all need these feelings in our lives after the stress and exhaustion of December. 

The moon jellyfish, or moon jelly, is found throughout the world's oceans. Around the size of a plate, it is recognizable by the four circles visible through the translucent white bell. These four circles are gonads, the reproductive organs located at the bottom of the stomach, and they are normally a light blue or purple color. Jellyfish are 95% water and have no brain, blood or heart.

The moon jelly differs from many jellyfish in that they lack long, potent stinging tentacles. Instead they have hundreds of short, fine tentacles that line the bell margin. The moon jelly’s sting is mild and most people have only a slight reaction to it if anything at all. In size, they range between 2-15 inches (5-38 cm) in diameter, with average diameter being about seven inches (17.8 cm) and three inches (7.6 cm) tall.

Moon jellyfish tend to live alone but water currents and wind may tend to steer them in groups called blooms. They swim horizontally with their bell facing the surface of the water. As they swim, they spread their tentacles, making it easier for food to be caught. These jellies are carnivorous and feed primarily on zooplankton. Because of the translucence of moon jellyfish, plastic bags that end up in the ocean often end up looking like jellies to other sea creatures. This is why we have to be more careful as humans to keep plastic away from the open ocean.
