This painting is inspired by the Green Sea Turtle.

The fabulous green sea turtle inhabits open waters worldwide in tropical and sub tropical climates. It is always on the move looking for its favorite food - sea grasses and macro algae. Juvenile turtles are also known for eating smaller invertebrates like jellyfish. They can sometimes get jellies confused with plastic bags and hurt themselves. This species is currently labeled as endangered and there are widespread efforts to lower the amount of pollution in our oceans to help them thrive.

Green Sea Turtles are the most commonly seen species of sea turtles and can grow up to four feet long and weigh up to 400 pounds! They have a beautifully patterned brown shell and are actually named for a subdermal layer of green fat — which turns green due to the turtle’s diet of sea grasses and algae.

These turtles nest in over 80 countries, but a place where they hold a lot of cultural significance is Hawaii. Revered for centuries by Native Hawaiians, the honu (Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles) symbolizes wisdom, guidance, and good fortune. The honu is a powerful metaphor of the connection between people, land, and ocean. Hawaiian legend holds that the hero Aiai created honu by drawing marks upon a rock near the water turning it into a turtle. Spotting a honu is considered a blessing. It is said to bring peace, protection, and good fortune to those who encounter it.
