They migrate to Mexico during the cooler months of August - November. The Cempasúchil flowers are also known as marigolds. They have a deeper meaning in November because of the Day of the Dead. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe legend of cempasúchil follows two childhood friends Xochitl and Huitzilin that grew into lovers. Tragically, Huitzilin was killed in battle and left Xochitl overwhelmed with grief. She begged the Sun God, Tonatiuh, to join Huitzilin in eternity. Moved by her sorrow, Tonatiuh transformed Xochitl into a beautiful cempasúchil flower with fiery colors as intense as the sun’s rays. The flower of 20 petals remained closed until a hummingbird, the spirit of Huitzilin, perched upon it and opened, revealing its brilliant orange hue. The legend holds that as long as the cempasúchil blooms and hummingbirds visit, the love of Xóchitl and Huitzilin persists. Because we hold love for all our dead, this flower represents el Dia de Los Muertos for Mexican people. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003ePan de muerto, bread of the dead, is a seasonal pan dulce (sweet bread) placed on the altars to pay homage to the departed during November’s Dia de Los Muertos. Its roots can be traced back to pre-Hispanic traditions. The Aztecs had rituals where they held sacrifices to the gods and offered a type of bread made from amaranth. When Spanish colonizers arrived, they introduced wheat flour and other baking techniques. European and indigenous customs blended to create what we now recognize as pan de muerto. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003ePan de Muerto, flowers, and candles are placed in altars honoring deceased loved ones during late October - early November. Dia de Los Muertos is a holiday that is celebrated with happiness in Mexico.
