January Mariposa Painting

The original painting for the January edition of Mariposa Mail Club. 

This painting is inspired by the celebrations of El Dia de Los Reyes Magos ( Three Kings Day). This is a tradition that my family has followed my whole life. We spend time together to eat Rosca de Reyes and sometimes even get gifts! The painting features a sweet bread Rosca, the baby Jesus figurine that lays hidden in the bread, a camel, a crown, gemstones and stars, and Chocolate Abuelita.

El Dia de los Reyes Magos is on the 6th of January every year. The holiday honors the Three Wise Men on the day they gave gifts to baby Jesus. During the celebration we serve Rosca de Reyes, or King’s Cake. “Rosca” means wreath and “reyes” means kings. The Rosca has an oval shape to symbolize a crown and is traditionally adorned with dried and candied fruits to symbolize the many jewels that a crown would have. This year my family and I shared a Rosca covered in concha icing instead of the traditional kind. It was delicious! Now it is more common to see roscas decorated differently or some that even have cream/chocolate filling inside. One thing that every Rosca de Reyes has in common is that they will have one or more small dolls inside, which represent baby Jesus. Once everyone is ready to eat, they will start cutting up rosca slices one at a time. The person who gets a slice with the doll must provide tamales for everyone on Día de la Candelaria on February 2nd. It’s always so much fun to see who will get the baby doll in their slice!
